New insight into key players in iron metabolism has yielded a novel tool for distinguishing among root causes of iron overload or deficiency in humans, the researchers report in the August issue of Cell Metabolism, a publication of Cell Press. While the body needs iron to produce hemoglobin, a substance in red blood cells that enables them to carry oxygen, too much iron can build up and eventually damage organs.

A watchdog group is urging US regulators to ban eight widely used artificial food dyes, including Yellow 5 and Red 40, because they are linked to hyperactivity and behavior problems in children who are sensitive to them. Nonprofit watchdog group the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) has petitioned the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to ban the artificial food colourings it refers to as the "secret shame" of the food and industry and its regulators.

  2. Scientists in the UK are hoping to develop a new vaccine using patients' own blood cells to suppress the effects of rheumatoid arthritis; if successful the work will signal a major breakthrough in the treatment of the auto-immune disease. Newcastle University's Musculoskeletal Research Group is to carry out the research, which is being funded by a 216,000 pound grant from the medical research charity the Arthritis Research Campaign.

A possible future way to prevent relapses into drug dependence has been discovered by researchers at Linkoping University and the German cancer research center DKFZ. The target is the dopamine-producing nerve cells in the midbrain. Earlier research has shown that these cells become more excitable when a person takes drugs. To find out the functional meaning of this, these researchers used a mouse model for cocaine dependence.
